Tragedy That Leads to Change

  • Emily Adkins passed away October 21, 2022 at the age of 23 due to a preventable blood clot stemming from a fractured ankle. Emily was a kind and passionate individual who always wanted to help others.
  • Emily’s parents, Doug and Janet Adkins, created Emily’s Promise in her honor to raise awareness of the deadly nature of blood clots and prevent unnecessary deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, blood clots kill more Americans than car crashes, breast cancer, and AIDs combined per year. These are preventable deaths, and the path toward prevention starts with people knowing their Caprini Risk Score – a number that calculates an individual’s risk of encountering a medical emergency caused by a blood clot.
  • Through advocacy by Emily’s Promise, the Emily Adkins Prevention Act was voted into law by the Florida legislature and signed by the governor in June of 2023. The new law directs the Secretary of the Agency for Health Care Administration, in conjunction with the Florida Surgeon General, to establish a policy workgroup that will:
  • Work to implement a statewide surveillance system to collect data on how many Floridians experience blood clots
  • Establish a standard of care that will improve early identification and treatment of blood clots

Awareness

  • Emily’s Promise, in conjunction with several local governments in north Florida, designated October 2023 as Emily Adkins Blood Clot Awareness Month. Efforts from this month included information published in print, digital, and television media around Florida and proclamations signed by several local government boards.
  • Doug Adkins, CEO of Emily’s Promise has been published as a thought leader on the importance of blood clot awareness and prevention in media outlets throughout Florida including The Florida Times-Union and the Tallahassee Democrat.
  • Emily’s Promise stays engaged in efforts to increase awareness of blood clot prevention and awareness through Emily’s Promise social media and through relationships with media outlets.

Goals

  • Emily’s Promise aims to raise $150,000 in 2024 to support advocacy efforts.
  • Emily’s Promise hopes to support and advocate for national legislation that will engage federal agencies, such as the CDC, in nationwide efforts to mitigate the loss of American lives to blood clots.
